Early Brake Pads

Post by "Kamper" »

Hi All
Just a quick question. I understand that early vans can have one of two types of front brake calipers - do they all take the same pads??
Got to change the pads on my 81 Kamper, bu not yet sure which calipers it has and want to be sure I buy the right ones!!
Thanks
:D
Kind regards

John

Girling or Teves Calipers are fitted on early vans.
Easy wat to tell is retaining pins...

Girling have spring clips on pins at rear of caliper and clips are removed to withdraw pins away from vehicle, also Girling have half moon cut out anti rattle shims.

Teves have sprung heads on pins and are tapped out towards vehicle, also Teves have no cut outs in anti rattle shims.

Hope this helps... :D

I think you will find that the pads are not the same . ( I could be wrong), but Teves have square pads, and I think Girlling's are different. Easiest way to tell is to remove the wheel and take a look.........
I have just redone my front brakes -Teves. 83 westy 1.6d n/a

lhd.... you are not wrong... girling mk II caliper pads are different frm 85 on.

Pre 85 girling or teves have square pads.

Kamper...If you buy a kit with pins, springs and shims you will need to know what type caliper you have ( teves or girling ) to get the right pins, springs and shims in kit.
If you are buying pads only then they are the same.
When I did mine I just bought the pads.
Cheers

All 80-85 pads are the early "square type", calipers are different makes, but the pads are not.. I have a feeling the seal kits fit either too..

Post 85 have different calipers and "cresent" shaped pads, these fit all 2wd and 14" syncros (16" have different again IIRC)

Only thing I would suggest, use good quality pads.. Pagid are good, JK and GSF sell them.
