Flashing Temp Light on Dashboard

Post by Llamapup »

Hello All

I'm looking for some advice regarding my temperature warning light that flashes on my dashboard at very random times. When I started it from cold this morning it was flashing, but when I started it from cold later this afternoon it was off. It seems that it occasionaly comes on when I start the engine and stays on until I turn the engine off. The van runs well and comes up to temperature nicely with the needle steady in the middle of the guage.

The coolant resevoir is filled to the correct level and the leads coming off the top of the expansion bottle seem to be good and tight.

The van is a 1988 VW Westfalia Camper. 1.6 TDI with 150 klm on the clock.

Any suggestions as to how to fix the problem.

Thanks

Check the connection plug under where it connects to the PCB under the dash

Thanks dwayne. Thats good to know. Mine just keeps on flashing for the entire journey.

Windysurfer, whats PCB stand for? I'll have a look under the dash when it gets light again.

Thanks

if all of the above fails to cure this check the temp sender wire and the coolant level wire for damage along its length, its not unknown forthe outer insulation to be come cracked, chaffed or melted causing shorting to earth, activating the light.

Also check the earths in the engine bay, to the engine , gearbox and battery ect, as i have know it to cause the light to flash when other things are under load, like brake lights being used, starter motor, ect because to fluctuating voltage due to poor earthing

To determine which part of the cooling circuit is at fault, locate and remove the LSCU (level sender control unit) which looks like a relay and usually in the fusebox. With it removed, switch on the ignition and observe the coolant LED (after self test should go off). If the fault is cured then the fault is in the coolant level sender circuit and usually a poor earth or connection causing the LSCU to think that you have lost water. The LSCU is an electronic module which must also have a good earth and this is usually found at the earth cluster next to the fuse box and worth checking along with everything else that has been suggested.

PCB is the printed circuit board.
There is a plug which connects to this under the dash.
I had a similar problem and it turn out to be a bad connection between the connector and the PCB
