Leisuredrive Pop top

Post by dirtygertie »

ok, I'll start at the begining......

......I thought that I'd bought a Devon pop-top roof from E-bay. I've been to fetch it today; Hired a van for the job (mine wouldn't start  ) and drove to sheffield to fetch it.

It turned out to be a leisuredrive pop-top, not a devon - the roof has some (bad) filler work on it where it has been cracked; the skylight needs replacing; the canvas is dirty & manky; the hinges are missing and it doesn't have any bed boards.
but we do have the metal frame that goes around the hole; the fibreglass thingy's that the bed board slide on & the plastic strips that go around the canvas where it is attached to the roof and the gas struts are all in very good condition.

I know what a devon roof looks like from the inside & how the bed slides out - but I can't work out how this leisuredrive one works cos there seems only to be one hole that I presume goes above the main 'living' area next to the sliding door.
has anyone got any pics of a leisuredrive pop-top so that I can see how it is fitted & how the bed works, cos at the moment it seems that the bed rests directly on the metal of the roof - I presume that some sort of support or base will have to be made out of wood or something.
Nigel wants to wait until we can get a devon roof & fit that cos he recons that there will be too much 'faffing' having to fabricate bits that we don't have with this one - I'd rather have a look at how big a job it is 1st...

oh, I nearly forgot the best bit - cos we were going to leave it as it wasn't what we thought it to be..........the guy let us have it for free cos he wanted the space in his unit & just wanted rid of it :ok

the leisuredrive upstairs bed slides on a plywood base that is bolted to the existing van roof behind the standard hole in the mid section of the roof..... basically its just a matter of bolting (or screwing from below) a couple of batterns to the existing metal roof and then placing a oblong plywood base of the correct size onto the batterns and screwing down.
Infact, i think i have the batterns and base lurking aboout here in my carport from the one i broke???? unless emma and john took them with the roof, i cant remember. You have the bits the bed slides out onto, thats the important bit, the moulded side peices.

as for the actual roof, making a good tidy repair of the bodge shouldnt be a problem, depending on how bad the bodge is. Roof vents are cheap as chips from agent fiamma of camperlands or any caravan shop, and easy to fit.

Emma (ermie) knows where to get new hinges and catches from.......

the leisuredrive roof is lighter than the devon one, but other than that about the same in appearance.

Any pics to show Nigel how it 'works' would be great.....I still think that it is very salvageable but if Nigel's performance over cutting a fridge vent hole is anything to go by I might be asking for some 80-90 assistance!
