What engine is this?

Post by Fozzie »

I'm off to see a camper tomorrow, described (not entirely helpfully) as:

"1986 Volkswagen T25 Diesel; 5-speed gearbox; does avg 13.5 K/litre" (which I think is about 38mpg).

When I see it, how will I be able to tell its engine size and whether it's a Turbo? (and so whether it's worth the £3,800 asking).

Help much appreciated...

Look for the engine code, located below on a raised section of the casting between injectors 3+4, If it starts with CS its a 1.6 non turbo, if it starts with KY its a 1.7 non turbo, if it starts with JX its a 1.6 turbo diesel.

Ask to see the log book ..

The engine size is also on the engine block

The 'Wiki' at the top of the page can help you. Here's a link, items 4 and 5.4 would appear to be relevant to you.

No one can tell you what it's worth; you have to look at other vans for sale generally to get a comparison. Ultilmately, it's only worth what you are willing to pay for it.

Whatever you do, do your research, do NOT look at it through rose tinted spec's and do Not buy the first thing you see (unless it's exceptional).

By far the most important thing with these vans is bodywork

Thanks for the pointers, folks. I had looked but failed to find the needle in the huge haystack!
