I am a newbie camper owner. The steering wheel on my T25 (1983 registered) grinds when I turn it. The sound is coming from where the wheel joins the column. Anyone know what is likely to be causing it and how I can sort it?
Apologies if this is a really basic questions but "I know Nothing"!!
Many thanks
You will find lots of knowledeable people on here [unlike me] who should be able to help, however mine makes strange noises from the steering column and i just put it down to old age and creakiness
Thanks for your reply. I only just got mine, its my first but very long awaited, camper so I basically know nothing at all but am very willing to learn from the experts and hopefully get to do something on it myself other than the battery, plugs and points LOL
Sounds like its the slip ring for the horn...this has a copper surface which can become very worn and bits break off...undo centre nut on steering wheel... lift off wheel and all will become obvious! PS make sure wheels are in straight line when removing steering wheel ...it will make centering of steering wheel much easier on re-assembly
Self catering traditional North Norfolk cottage available...pm me!
1987 VW 1.6 Turbo Diesel with Holdsworth Villa 3 Pop Top conversion circa 1990...all original and simply the best!

thanks for that I willl give it a go tomorrow morning
its also common for the cowling to be either broken, misassembled or misaligned and it touches the wheel, making a grinding noise when the wheel is turned

The slip ring is made of brass.
This happened to me in Switzerland this summer...horrible grinding noise! Remove the steering wheel, clean the slip ring and spring contact, bend the contact so it touches slightly differently and apply a thin smear of vasoline to the slip ring, refit...job done.
