new bozo in a bus

Post by Da Tow'd »

Howdy Gang,
Just thought I'd say Hi
I've been into VW's since the '60's.( oh yes I do remember the 60's)
We live in the wilds of British Columbia Canada.
I bought my '86 Syncro from a good Doctor who was leaving Canada and headed to New Zealand- for the first few years the syncro worked just fine then it developed the dreaded leaking headgasket last spring so instead of rebuilding the wasserboxer 2.1L I'm looking for a VW 1.9 diesel to stick in.
I've worked on VW and Volvos and have quite a collection ( mainly because I have some land to store them)
'57 bug
'58 single cab
'56 deluxe micro bus with sunroof
and 10 other VWs
122S Volvo
142S volvo
Citroen ID 21
1948 Thames E83W

I'll be asking questions about converting to diesel power .
Project in the shop now for a winter project is a 1962 356B "Flintstone" special I'm redoing the floor metal that has rotted away

cheers

Welcome to Syncro and club80-90 Hank so ask away...

Presume you know your way around here, there's a fair bit in the Tech Advice pages, and in the Wikipedia that can help with basic questions...

And even though you hove from cold climes in the Old Empire (!), hopefully you've noticed that an oil cooler is highly recommended with these bigger diesels, indeed any of those VW diesels in the back.

Is it the canted 52 degree installation or upright you're going for... low (JX) turbo or AAZ position? Thought the JX canted diesel parts would be in very short supply over there...

is there one with an original floor anywhere in the world :)

Thanks for the welcome Harry
I'm not sure on what the angle of the engine will be but upright might be easiest
I guess that is one of the questions I'll be hoping to get the answers here.
interesting site I think I'm going to enjoy it here

I drive a '85 Golf diesel and really love that diesel engine and would like one in the Syncro ( maybe a 1.9L )

Good point on the 356 floors

My goodness, you guys get RIGHT DOWN to it... great cradle. DIY?

Oh! and maybe Russel Syncro-Nutz can give some pointers if you're going upright, he's done one (or two? (or three? ( or ?)))...

The rotissere sure is handy- we used Volvo connnecting rods to mount the front suspension and adjustable flat chains around the rear torsion bar housing welded to the rotating frame- we can flip it right over no more overhead welding for me.
The rotissere will take a split window VW bus no problem- we got the plans for it off the Samba site.

Cranken Wagen has a cradle for his splitty similar to that one and with little modification would fit a T25

A splitty singlecab workhorse loaded with cider apples? Looks like a good lifestyle :)

I'm doing upside down welding at the mo', no chance of a rotissserie, so I just keeping humming to myself Diana Ross' .... upside down, round and round, inside out, boy you're ....' Mmm

Keeps the melancholy away

There are lots of AAZ 's available in Canada, not the state's . You will have to get all the different mounting bars, engine mounts, bell housing etc. but can be easily done. The only issue would be that you will either have to make an engine mount for the L/S to clear the turbo if you use the original exhaust or find an exaust for a 1.6 TD from a T25 or a TD diesel Quantum [they exist in the states]. Also suggest an extra oil cooler and intercooler. You should check out VWdiesel.net for any VW diesel hot rodding/ power info.
