Then my question is answered, perhaps I should have asked does the 1.6td have an oil regulator. I was curious to know as Im interested in anything that has to do with oil in my engine at the moment as my tappets buzzed again the other day only for a short while and i read a thread where an oil regulator has caused sone noises but it cant have been a 1.6td.

Tappets shouldn't rattle on start up, they aren't hydraulic, if they were to rattle they would rattle all the time.
People are lazy and ignorant when it comes to 1.6TD valve clearances, people assume they are hydraulic therefore self adjusting and this isn't the case.
Tappets should be checket and set every 20k I recommend.
It's not a 2 minute job so it often gets "glossed over" on the service as they are quite involved to get right requiring all manner of special tools and a good selection of adjusting shims.
You may be thinking of an oil pressure relief valve?!

re valve clearances
I have the service schedule that came with the 1986 vehicle.
The first service at 1,000km says check valve clearances, but no mention is made again for later services at all. It is not listed as a service item by VAG and would therefore not get looked at ( I have to presume).
In the Russek guide it says 'inverted bucket -type tappets , hydraulically operated from model year 1986'
Am I doing something wrong?,
Bit worrying if there is other items that need doing but not listed?

Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see.
