Engine Number

I'm filling all the forms out to get an agreed value and I have to quote the engine number. My van had a new engine fitted in 2005 so it is not the original number quoted on the log book. Where can I find the number on the "new" engine? Am I supposed to tell the DVLA ?

if its a recon chances are it won't have a engine number.

Why? My recons have an engine number in exactly the same place as the original number. And yes, I have told the DVLA.
