HELP! I have a much loved 1986 1.9l petrol transporter. After the head gasgets (spp??) went on the old engine at easter this year, we had the new engine fitted. The Gasgets went again 1000 miles later, and were replaced by the engine company. They maintained (this bit is a bit hazy as I only got to talk to them via the garage) that there must have been something wrong with the circulation system for this to have happened, but they did the repair job on the engine under the warranty.
SO we had the pipes flushed, then a new radiator and thermostat fitted, after the garage failed to find any blockages in the pipes. (can you hear the cash leaving the building!!!). Then we went to S Wales, Ireland, and S Wales again and everything was fine, but the temp was higher than it had been previously - sitting at 7/8ths hot.
Then we overheated on a steep slow hill up onto some Cumbrian fells about 6 weeks ago. The AA man took out the thermostat and fitted an override on the fan so we could get home.
The garage failed to find anything wrong when we got home.
Since then we have over heated on Friday last week whilst trying to find a spot on a camp site at Conniston, in traffic on the M6 on the way home, and in traffic after just a 20 min journey on Monday.
I saw the water pump working when the AA man was doing his elimination checks, but maybe it was about to pack up, but it is one of the things we have had replaced in the last 18 months.
ANY IDEAS??
We are in Lancashire, does anyone know of any reputable garages who would be able to help me?

Have you replaced the darlek cap on your expansion tank in the engine bay (not the one behind the flap)?
Get a genuine VW one, or one from brickwerks. If yurs is balck its ancient, if blue not so ole...but will have a date stamp on it. If not genuine vw, good chance it is not working properly.

I have to agree with the above post, if all the pipe work has been flushed and the overheating is becoming intermittent I'd be changing the expansion tank pressure cap, as these have been known to be the cause similar faults.

Genuine cap and genuine thermostat seem to be essential items from previous posts, and then a thorough bleed of the cooling system (no ramps required
)
If the temp gauge was running at 7/8 in normal use then that should be a pointer to you to stop and get it fixed asap, or the inevitable will / did happen
