The most efficient heater for your purpose apart from gas or oil powered engine water circulating heater is your engine itself. Batteries are next to hopeless for heating purposes and to put out say 3KW (equivilent to a domestic fan heater) would need to pump out 3000/12 = 250A which is what your starter motor can draw in a cold day. I hate to have to say this but the solution to your problem given that your engine is in good nick and your battery, starter & thrmostat are good, is to get your bum out there five minutes early and get it running. When I do this I put a lock and chain around my steering wheel/gear lever soas to prevent scrotization. (Not that they exist before lunch time) A good idea for the cab area is a thermal blanket type thing which can be draped over and secured with a couple of aerolastcs. At least you won't have to do all that scraping.

ok mr air man - how you know this stuff??
does it really reduce engine wear?
How do you splice it into the water system? Do you mean that water from the engine goes through the heater....or via some sort of heat exhanger? If it is the latter, how do you circulate the engine water without running the engine?
So many questions....
