As the title says, the 1.6TD engine is noisy at startup (quite clackery clack) but that quietens down within a few seconds (5 to 10 or so seconds).
The engine has done 79,000 miles and has a full VW service history.
Is this noise normal? I would have thought not, so interested if your thoughts on what the likely cause is.

Probably sommit to do with the oil gettin up to the head area. Its normal for it to be 'clickity clack' on start up, even with a new engine. The JX design has been around for years.

My 1.9 ( 1Y ) is the same. It worries me quite a bit so I never rev it on start up just let it tick over till it all goes quiet.
I only fitted the engine earlier this year and all was good within. The oil pump was well within tolerance & I refaced the end plates before fitting it back.

If in doubt, get valve clearances checked (service item every 30.000 km if I remember correctly) and have the injectors checked for correct spray pattern and timing (life expectancy on those around 150.000 km).
Having said that ...the JX does make a racket well beyond it's size, especially when cold and on idle in general.

I think the 1Y has hydrolic tapits, so if its really clattery for a bit they probubly drained and it takes a moment for the oil presure to refill them, not the end of the world. JX, as with all factory fitted T3 diesels has solid tapets. I've wondered in the past if they did this because it works better mounted on the pi$$ as they are. Never herd anyone mention an issue with hydrolic tappets it though with AAZ and other conversions - the number that there are you'd have thought a problem would have come to light.
In genral, Indirect injection diesels are very rough and clattery when cold. Useing the cold start advance leaver helps slightly. Its common for diesels to have an automatic advance and sometime idle raseing system to make them seem smoother when cold. Later engines commonly run the heaterplugs after the engine has started too to help further reduice this. If it starts fine its nothing more than a refinement issue so don't worry. Solid tappets do need to be set right though, that is important.
