Several possibilities, none particularly good news;
Clutch drag so not releasing, usually caused by rusting splines on the input shaft/centre plate.
Air in the clutch release mechanism, so not fully dis-engaging the clutch.
Or I guess the selector rod mechanism has broken in some way but there will be a lot of difference between this external noise and an internal g/box fault.
A shncro ring has broken or bearing has collapsed internally.
