Engine dead! Help me decide what to do next!

Post by Mayor Goldie Wilson »

1988 1.6 TD JX caravelle

OK the engineer has confirmed by listening to engine that it had dropped a 'swirl chamber' and the engine is wrecked.

I am not mechanically minded beyond the outer casing anyway but by the sound of the engine i think he must be right!

SO my idea now is to install a 1.9 TD for more power,:

1) What would you recommend?
2) How much for an engine and to have it fitted?
3) Does the 1.9 TD need any other stuff changing in the van?
4) Is there a better option available?

i would appreciate your comments, thanks.
i will be mayor!

Sorry for my stupidity! I dont know too much about the diesiels for these but I do know a swirl chamber is just an area for the diesel and air to mix as its injected. Its part of the casting of the head, or so I thought, so how can it fall off? :?
My apologies if I'm being a numpty here. :D

I think he is talking about the pre combustion chamber that is steel and pressed into the head. It is retained by the head gasket, so, even though it comes loose, it doesn't often come adrift.
Get the head off first. Then start worrying.
