torque or torque+angle?

Post by dave friday »

ok, i did my flywheel bolts up to 54ftlb,ive since been told they should be 30ftlb +90deg .As i have to replace the crank shaft oil seal [the big expensive one!!] what should i do [25 days before the bolts arrive!] can i re-use the oldbolts and use the torque+ angle to do them up?.

I doubt very much if you'll have trouble from the flywheel. Bolts won't come undone thats for sure. Others may disagree on this but if its on its on.

Depends on wether they are stretch bolts or not (usually indentified by a tappered section which allows the bolts to stretch) These bolts sometimes come with blue threadlock pre-applied (like sliding brake caliper bolts) but if they don't I would recommend you apply some sort of stud/threadlock fluid (locktite sell it) to the first centimeter of thread on each bolt before screwing it in.
Yes re-use as long as they are not badly corroded/pitted.

Cheers Martin, the bolts have only been torqued once [when i re-built the engine] and yes they did have blue threadlock on them.

Ok, i just did a wheel nut up to 30nm+ 90deg and checked it with the torque wrench ..well over 170nm [120 ftlb ish] and in the process found that some of the wheel nuts wernt done up to 133ftlb [i had some new tyres fitted!].
so im happy to re-use the bolts.
