Re-invigorating tired looking interior furniture

Post by Cruz »

The cupboards in my Leisuredrive are looking rather tired and showing their age. The cupboards are the usual fake wood style laminate

Has anyone got any tips for a more modern look without replacing what is still solid furniture? i.e paint types, etc

Fablon is good but make sure you get the bigger width rolls - other wise you'll have unsightly seams. There's also some paint that you can get for contiboard that a friend of ours used and sang its praises. Can't remember the name of it but'll I'll give him a shout tomorrow and tell ya later :)

Cheers. Is fablon just for the doors or the whole unit?

To tart Vince's furniture up I removed the Hockney effect Fablon - it was giving me a right royal headache.

I then used a similar to the original wood effect Fablon to cover up one of the doors that had lost some of its laminate/veneer facing (take the handles off for a neat job). I used beeswax furniture polish on the wood trim and it came up lovely - took out some of the scratches.

OK - So I know it's not quite the right colour - but my reckoning is it'll either fade in the sunlight (when we get some); it'll get covered in stickers from the many trips and meets we will eventually go on; or when I can be 'arrissed I'll get round to covering the rest :)

The only trouble with fablon and paint is that its not as hard wearing as proper formica.

These people can supply sheets of the type of plastic laminate that tops your kitchen work top.
http://www.plasticsandveneers.co.uk/laminates.htm
Comes in big sheets about 1mm thick. Just about every finish you could think of. Its not that clear from the website what there is but I've been in the warehouse and have seen this stuff so know its there!
All you need then is some time contact adhesive and a router to make a neet job of the edges. Sounds easy

our woodwork had water marks ..looked orrible...so i sanded it down and then used yacht varnish to re vanish all the woodwork....scubbed the fablon on the cupboards and the work surface..comes up a right treat...e covered all the seats and curtains...re carpeted most of the van...and just gave it a Mrs CC stylee clean....surprising how the van looked cleaner and fresher :D
