piece of cake, phillips screwdriver 10 mins job, unplug, unscrew, replace screw plug and play, once you've removed the lower shroud, two phillips screws.

Aidan
I thought there was only one screw and that srew was angled into the column so you couldn't get a srew driver on it unless you slide off the aluminium lock housing from the colum.
Basically steering wheel removal/shroud removal/switch gear removal (3 screws)/sheer bolt removal (may have to chisel off/then lock housing removal)

I maybe thinking of later Golf/Passat/Jetta/polo where I know you need a puller to remove the top column sleave as well as the above.
But as you say not a particularly difficult job.

Well.......should be easy to see....just drop the lower column shroud and have a look, if you can get to the screws then Aidan is right.

there is a difference between ignition switch (small white plastic thing attached with 1 small phillips screw) and complete steering lock.

To get screw out means pulling off complete lock unless you do it the bodge way.

Ignition switch

Post by kentishvanman »

Update.
Have purchased new ignition switch and had a look at what is involved.
The switch is situated inside the steering lock housing and it would seem that this steering lock will have to be removed from the steering column in order to get at the screw that holds the switch in place.
The Haynes manual goes through the process of removing the steering column, using a ball joint separator and a puller, before dismantling the bit that I am interested in.
There does not appear to be any reason why (refering to the manual diagram) the steering lock housing cannot be slid off the top of the steering column after the steering wheel, multi funtion switch and spacer sleeve have been removed.
Unless anyone knows different.

You need a puller on the 90's onwards cars but not on any t25's

So as described but without the necessity for a puller to remove a sleave step down as T25's don't have one (the steering wheel has the small spline) worth remembering as small spline MK1 polo's/Golfs/Scirroco steering wheels will fit with slight switch gear adjustment.

Actually a pretty easy 30 minute job and doesn't need special puller tool that later VW models require.

So big nut on steering wheel (knees either side and wiggle)
3 small flat scres that go through the switch gear
Three posidrive screws holding the couling
Lower pinch bolt on aluminium steering lock housing (maybe sheer bolt type)
Remove the push on plugs
Put the key in the ignition and turn to first position (I think) in order to allow housing to be pulled off the column.
One retaining screw for white plastic switch
Rebuild in the reverse order
Remember to take your steering wheel off in the straight ahead position and refit the same way.
