MORE Headlamp upgrade advice

Post by Cruz »

I'm back again

Right I've decided to use the original van wiring (laziness)
and have come up with a wiring diagram to show what I'm going to do (early 1983 van)

Does this look right? What fuse size should I use?

Wiring Diagram

If you're already on H4 headlamps and the reflectors are clean and corrosion-free, upgrade to "Osram Silver Star +50%" or "Phillips Vision Plus 30" bulbs. Makes quite a difference. About £18 per pair, and no hassle fiddling about with wiring.

Technically your diagram is correct but there are a couple of things worth noting. Make sure you are not using ANY of the old wire in the lines that will supply the current, I deally you want to buy new h4 connectors and fit your heavy gauge wire right up to the rear of the bulb. Also you will need to uprate the wire which returns to ground on the other sides of the bulbs or you will just loose some volts there instead.
As for fuse rating you need to choose one slightly lower than the rating of the relay or the new cable (whichever is lower). The relay should be a 30A one and the cable should be quite capable of supplying this, therefore 25A fuses will probably be suitable.

OK then, I'll replace all the wires from the fusebox ignition terminal to the relay, then from the relay to the lamps, then from the lamps to ground. would 30amp wire do it all? (easier to get at maplins as they have no 15amp)

As for H4 connectors do you mean just the connector or a loom like this?

30A cable would be ideal, you'll probably only be drawing about 10A through it anyway but the larger the cable is the less volts you are likely to drop. Also ideally you need to buy the H4 connector on its own with the crimps and fit your cable straight into it. However the connector in that auction would probably be ok if you just spliced (soldered & sleeved) your cables on nice and close to the crimps.
