Odd and annoying problem

Post by FlowerPower »

An occasional knocking noise has started and I just can't work out what's causing it.
It's intermittent.
Not connected to engine speed.
Usually follows road speed (but not always :? ).
Can only be heard at low speed.
Appears to be coming from the roof or high up on the sides.
It sounds like something slapping the roof in the wind, but I've been up there and there's nothing loose or extra. The pop-top clips are all secure and there's nothing in the fishpond (it's a Holdsworth).

I know it's next to impossible to diagnose something like this without seeing it, but if anyone has any, ANY, even the vaguest of ideas what it could be, I would appreciate it.

IT'S MESSING WITH ME MELON, MAN!!!

No, it sounds like someone has fallen asleep on the roof and woken up as I've started to drive off and they're trying to attract my attention by slapping the top of the van.

You haven't got an ariel that flaps around in the wind and hits the roof?

No, the aerial is rusted shut.

There's nothing loose, as far as I can tell, and nothing to flat about. But that's what it sounds like. It just started a couple of days ago and it's been doing my head in ever since. If I had any hair, I'd be pulling it out.

I've got to pay more attention to details.

I think I found my flappy thing.

[IMG:684:513]http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p262 ... C10175.jpg[/img]

The plasticky trim thing between the roof and poptop base has come loose.

[IMG:719:539]http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p262 ... C10176.jpg[/img]

I can't push it back on as it's under way too much tension (I guess that's why it managed to come off in the first place), So I suppose I will have to cut it and fill the gap with something.

Oh well problem solved. It wasn't a ghost after all.

Have had same small problemette on my Holdsworth poptop...so wait till its a nice warm/sunny day...could be some distance away...cut the strip dead centre (relieves any tension) and put each side on using:

1 Warmth of sun making it flexible(or other heat source)
2 Flat blade to assist
3 Lubricant of some sort...KY's good it will wash off in time!
4 Patience...its a fiddly son-of-a-bitch job

By the way anybody know where you can get a new strip...I'm getting fed up putting it back on!!! :(
Self catering traditional North Norfolk cottage available...pm me!

1987 VW 1.6 Turbo Diesel with Holdsworth Villa 3 Pop Top conversion circa 1990...all original and simply the best!
