Turbo diesel that just won't stop

Post by Blue Meanies »

We have a 1.6 td JX engine transporter conversion.

She starts fine and runs great but won't stop on the key.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Embarresed at having to stall to stop!!

could be a dodgy ignition switch
but nearly 100% it will be a fauklty stop solenoid.

top of the fuel pump should be a power wire.

remove the wire and the unit under it , 24mm spanner (from memory)

get another from the scrapyard(or vw dealer)
repolace the unit and the plunger and spring!

Solonoid should "click" when you turn the ignition on, and "unclick" when you turn it off. Have a listen to it in the engine bay while someone turns the key to the first position (not turning the engine over)
Keep it real.

Had a look at solenoid, fairly sure that it is at fault.
will i have to remove the fuel line which runs above solenoid or can it be fiddled out slowly with open end spanner?

Worried about springs flying out too!

Hi, had exactly the same problem on a replacement 1.6TD turned out to be the solenoid but as I got it replaced under warranty - can;t advise on the swap process I'm afraid.

A quick way to check whether it's faulty iginition switch or not: switch on auxillary accessories - lights etc. if they go off but engine keeps running - switch is probably OK.

Cheers - and good luck

yes can be intermittent .

some times its a case of the plunger becoming rough on the sliding surface or dirt build up.
you can check when you remove.

which ever you can do , if you can get a spanner on do it that way , but wont cause a problem if you remove the fuel line.
you should not need to bleed the fuel system.

Has to be your solenoid, a dodgy switch most likely to cause a break in current and cause it to cut out. On a totally unrelated issue, I once changed the oil and filter on my Daihatsu fourtrak, and the fresh oil didnt drain down the block quick enough and got into the pipe to the turbo which takes the fumes from the rocker cover. about 1/2 mile it revved out of control, key off had no effect, revving so fast the rev counter actually went past the stopper and started round again! I dipped the clutch to try and slow down but thought the head would blow off as the revs went up even more, brakes wouldnt slow it, all this in 3rd gear.finally it burned whatever oil was in the pipe, but it must have been doing 10,000 revs for at least 30 seconds. Amazingly it had no ill effects at all! Bit scarey though!

hehe! It did, you just need to take the head off to see, but at least it didn't go bang that time, maybe after three or four of those it'll be showing it in other ways :)
The VW diesels can do it too, but this one above sounds like a solenoid alright.[/url]

my sister laguna blew up as it wouldn't stop on the key. a seal went in the intercooler which meant that engine oil was being burnt by the engine the engine gets faster and faster even if you have the key in your hand.. eventually all of the engine oil gets burnt and the engine seizes.

I am sure this is not your problem.

I am actually more shocked that you manage to stall a diesel.
