interior rebuild

Post by Iceworx »

Im rebuilding the interior from scratch. Fabricating the cabinets etc isnt a problem. I can do that

What I need some advice on, is a finish for them or a surface if you like.

I want it to look really smart and be pretty hardwaring.

Ideally a big roll of iron on laminate would be superb, but I cant seem to find anywhere.

Or should I paint it? what sorta prep work and paint should I use?

any advice / links / pointers will be very gratefully recieved.

Laminate is available from places like this

http://www.topclasscarpentry.com/product/14735/

Painting is an option but if done badly looks tacky. Its all down to how much work you are prepared to put into the prep and finish. If you are going to all the trouble of making new units then I would laminate the surfaces. I like the 'westy look' with plain light colours (in small spaces) and these should be cheaper than immitation wood grain. Do a search on google for laminates. You can get 3mm lightweight Laminate board but it is very expensive in my opinion. Look here

For the type of laminate that is on your kitchen worktop try
http://www.plasticsandveneers.co.uk/
I have been in the Brampton depot and there are hundereds of designs in sheets about 1mm thick, which would need to be stuck onto your boards with contact adhesive.

For self adhesive vinyl, try these people, they have loads in bigger sizes. Some is supposed to be suitable for covering kitchen doors etc.

Use either with lipped 'T' edging trim to finish off and they would look very proffessional. Obviously the plastic laminate will be stronger, but the vinyl is cheeper and quite strong too and easily repaired.

Fab link that Cyclone, Know where to go myself now for a wide range of finishes. Problem with the Vinyl is that it shrinks and wrinkles in hot weather, (probably last for centuries the way our summers are going!)

I guess its becuase I have a pretty clear ideal of what I want it to look like when finished. And all the rolls of material I have are plain colours :)

Look up Vohringer Board, that`s the stuff that the pro`s use for cabinets, it`s ultra-lightweight ply board with a proper finish on it.

Some here, but google it yerself for info
