Two cylinders arent firing

Post by jojorose »

Just benefited from the services of the RAC, my van is currently on holiday with them in Weston Super Mare and is coming back on a lorry Wednesday.

Had loads of trouble getting down to sunny devon but we made it. Leads, new hoses etc and then it had a couple of days in a Paignton Garage having further tests initially fuel related only to do the same thing on the way home. Drives great for about 70 miles and then shaking and juddering.

So the last RAC man, said he thought it was that two cylinders not firing. Is this serious? Ive spent hundreds in the last couple of weeks!!!!!!

When engine is idling is sounds beautiful.

I had a problem with a new fuel tank, some time ago. It gave the same symptons. Turned out that new tanks don't have the filter 'mushroom' at the bottom and the flakes of paint in the tank would float up and block the end of the pick up.

Take one dead wiper blade... Make it into a wobbly thing..... Insert it into the tank tube so that it is sure to protrude from the end inside. No problem ever since, including airport emergency dash from Rennes to Dinard at 80 mph.

Borrow a dissy and coil from an air cooled (with points) and try that. Just set it at 7.5 before tdc and run it. It could be something to do with the lectrics. Also... If its water boxer, check the little earth lead to the lh head. If the wire is white and flakey trim it back and fit a new connector.

Has anyone put it on an ignition analyser yet, to look at all the sparks for healthiness, and to check the compressions when hot.

Sounds like the basic engine is good if it idles cleanly and reliably... a good sign.

What exactly is it?

Garage says 1983 Aircooled 1.9 petrol engine?

No i havent had one of those tests. My regular bloke is coming for a look at it at some point so i will mention it. He cant do the job if it is cylinder head but he will at least make sure it needs doing!

Sort of similar problem on mine (2.0 A/C CU engine) was a partial blockage on float needle in carb, one side only.

if its the van we came and looked at the roof on years ago, its a 2l CU, and it sounds like a carb issue as someone above said.........

be carefull who you take it to in your neck of the woods, there is some right over charging going on that way on..............
