Hope anybody can help with this......?
Have recently returned from a round trip to cornwall, approx. 600 miles max, this most likley isn't nothing to do with it but it was when the problem first showed.
I have a 1.6 TD (1.9 AAZ fitted), the problem lies with the gear stick, it is a 5 speed box therefore 1st gear is left, back and down (it's a LHD van), although I can still get the gear 1st gear appears to be becoming difficult to select, with the stick 'squeaking' ?? and providing an amount of resistance when 1st is selected, this also seems apparent when reverse is selected, same movement but the stick is moved forward as opposed to backwards, all other gears are selecting fine.
The resistance appears to be at the gearstick as this is where the noise is coming from, does it need lubrication or adjustment or is there a bigger problem.
Many thanks for any help........

Sorry but the pic is acutally the wrong way round from when it's in situ!!
See the rubbery bellows looking thing on the left on the bottom of the lever? There's a peg and spring affair inside it, as you select 1st or reverse it hits the side of the box and compresses. My guess is the squeak comes from the bellows running on the metal of the box and a bit of a clean up and re-grease should ... fingers crossed ... sort it out.
