Engine Code - what can it tell you

Post by mikey9 »

Looking to confirm a genuine VW replacement engine - is there any info to be gleaned form the engine code.

I am expecting a DGXXXXXX number

Do recons have a specific range of numbers/codes (i.e. stamped over an old number?)

Does the number indicate the age in any way e.g. >50000 = 1986 manufacture?

Just want to make sure the story adds up.......

Is there anything else I could look out for to confirm a Gen VW replacement engine??

Answering much of my question I found this (note to self - search first - then ask :oops: ).
https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... ine+number

I am still interested if anyone is prepared to give us a general range of numbers (anonymised if required - suggest XXX for last three nos) for info:

So far........

DG041413 = Nov1983
DG157XXX = 1989

Any more contributions please.

I have also gleaned that:
Number followed by a * or a VW in a circle = VW Recon.

the engine numbers are detailed on Etka and Etos so you can tell to a month when they were originally built, factory asterix at end on vw rebuilds, copied by other rebuilders, very late vw supplied engines have no numbers or code, just the vw recycle stamp and the week and year of manufacture. A VW rebuild will be identifiable by having the same number stamped on the two case halves on the flywheel bulge at the top, other manufacturers don't as far as I know stamp the case halves.

Interesting thread that made me go check my engine number as I was told it had a recon when I bought it

Log book states mine is ...
Registered March 88 DG135069

Actual engine number DG151XXX * , so I gather from previous posts that it is a VW recon because of the star after the number .

one question , should I inform DVLA of the engine change ? as previous owner obviously didn't .
