Aircooled cylinder head question

Post by Therunner »

Hi

OK, I'm attempting to swap cylinder heads (3 and 4) on our 1.6CT

It's only meant to be a temporary engine to give us the breathing space to do a top end rebuild on the original, but we managed less than 200 miles before we had to give up on it be recovered home!
It had started to misfire and there was exhaust smoke coming from that side of the engine.

So we took it off today and as you can see, it's slightly melted  and has a very visible crack ! tho it's somewhat reassuring to be able to see something wrong, if that makes sense.

So the question is; the cylinder head we've just taken off has rings of metal - gasket/seating thing? - where it meets the engine block, but the cylinder head from the engine that was originally in the van didn't have any! Is there any point in our continuing without these? If e need some, what exactly should we be looking to buy ie name/part no. ?

Thanks for looking

Well it seems that the cylinder head we want to replace has been flycut - we think the engine is a VEGE rebuild - and the rings are there to compensate for the cutting?
I've been roughly measuring it and the diameter is 1mm bigger than the head that we've been planning to put on! Now I'm no expert but that's probably a huge amount when it comes to engine tolerances?
Will the good head fit? And if it did, would we damage it, or other components if we try?
All we want to do is get the van running and useable while we get it together to rebuild the original into a 1776. :x

Thanks

Melvin
