Lowering springs

Does any one recognise or know anything about these -50mm spring sets on eBay at the moment - item 200245780717

Are they normal or harsh ride? I'm looking for less buffeting etc on windy motorways (like yesterday!) rather than a fashion statement, on a camper carrying a fair load most of the time...

For 50mm I would go the extra few quid and fit AVO springs.. brickwerks do them.

Or if you went for a 30mm drop then caravelle springs and shocks would give you the desired ride and drop.

PS how old are the shocks on your van?

Thanks for that. The shocks are good - ie very good, nearly new ones so that should not be a problem. The AVOs are my next choice, together with Si's levelling shim thingies and a front sus refurb due to a couple of balljoint rubbers being split...
I got some supposed caravelle ones off some one on here but they turned out to be standards when I got round to fitting them some months later. They seem hard to come by.
I was just trying to save a few quid and maybe fit them myself before getting it refurbed and adjusted by the man who knows...

I'm all for saving a few bob.. in that case I'm sure someone will give an opinion regarding the quality of the CMC springs.

Aren't standand length shocks too long for 50mm drop? just seem to remember seeing it posted somewhere.
Never heard of this make but most lowered springs are generally stiffer compared to standard which tends to lesson body roll etc...I would be a little concerned going this low with my Westy but you might not have so much under slung to catch.

Those springs look like Jamex/G-max/CMC plus god knows who else is branding them up as their own.
You can tell by the 3 coils wound tighter in the centre.
Those are the ones that don't lower the rear of the van much, if at all.
They are quoted as -45mm from Jamex, truth is that it's usually a lot more and they tend to sag with age as I have found out.
I sold them for a while but I had a couple of issues with them and the wholesaler wasn't interested in sorting things so I stopped selling them.

I am using H&R purple springs (lowest they offer) on my 1988 2wd Doka (T25 crewcab). The ride was harsh due to the suspension bottoming on the bumpstops. If you examine the upper shock covers on the from dampers, you wil see that there are 5 washer like discs cast as part of the upper portion of the rubber cover. When you lower your van as mush as I did (about 2.5-3") the body hits the bumps stops before the damper can do any work. The result is a very hard bump.

I removed the bumpstops and cut off two of the discs. That gave me an extra inch of travel. It may not seem like much but the difference is night and day. Once caveat is the damper covers need to be re-attached to the bump stops. You can try silicone glue or temp repair like I did -- duct tape.

Here's an image of my 1988 2wd lowered Doka next to my Syncro 16 Doka. This illustrated the extreme height difference possible with reasonable comfortable driving. The resulting ride is comparable to my mid-80's Porsche 911.

I should add that I use the Heavy Duty Bilsteins for dampers. There are two types of Bilsteins available off the shelf. I can't recall how they market them in the UK. IN the US they call them Heady Duty vs. regular.

Bilsteins are marketed as.

B4 - standard
B6 - Sport, or Heavy duty if you prefer.

H&R sell "Greens" which are -55mm and come part of their cup kitwith a choice of either Bilstein B6's or koni reds.

The H&R Purple springs are -45mm and not as low as the greens.

The greens are a much better spring as they are made from tapered wire and not paralell wire like the purples.

I can supply a CupKit with Bilsteins cheaper than H&R because I deal with Bilstein direct, the CupKit is very expensive!!
