I need the RAC to even change a tyre cos I am disabled.....

Post by eric »

.... and, bearing in mind, being a desk bloke all my life, also know sod all about the mechanics of vehicles.

All my knowledge has been gained from this wonderful site.

I have a VW Caravelle GL Syncro '87 with 170,000 mls on the clock and it has had a £3000 re-spray recently.

I'm willing to bet the more experienced of you can guess what's coming next and of course you would be right, but there is a twist!

Right, I know it needs a new/recon VC together with the prop-shaft refurbished; I'm aware of the VC test, but I prefer it to be replaced now. I did consider, having read diligently the many threads regarding VC versus Decoupler from the Simon of the Baxter (among others) and Lord Thomas of Diamond Hell ( also, among others).

In my view, it is the horses for courses syndrome.
My decision is purely based on usage and in my case I shall be taking my grandchildren on trips at home and abroad on normal roads with the occasional weekends seeing the Vans/Buses over terrain which, quite frankly, terrifies me, but nevertheless would find it exciting. Mileage will only be about 3000/4000 per year. (get on with it Eric ....Ed).

My question is simply (to you), is it possible for the vehicle to be driven with the VC removed?

Thank you all for reading this drivel.

Kind regards,
Eric.

jst remove the prop and you are in 2wd and everything is fine, much easier than removing the VC.

Thank you for that info Beaker.

Prop is already off and of course it's at present 2wd, however, can the VC be removed also and the bus still be driven?

The reason is that these items obviously have to sent away and due to exchange procedures the old VC will have to be sent before the new one (recon) is received. At least that's how I thought this would be the requirement of the companies.

FForgive my naivety.

You can run without a VC but you cant run it without a VC and the prop in place. You will also have to add extra oil due to the VC not being there.

I do have 2 recon Vc's in stock. One is being used and the other is available on exchange.
Give us a call if interested.

Thank you for your reply Russel.

Strewth,I must be frustrating for readers!

Well, the prop has been already ready taken out and I shall be sending this to GKN Leek for refurbishment soon.

So, if I take out the VC as well, the bus won't run?

Ok Russel, may I ask how much your VC's are please?

Kind regards,
Eric.

No Pete, my niece is taking the bus into garage for full service plus MOT, today.

When I questioned her the other week about the oddity and I asked her was she not concerned, she said "well uncle Eric, the other tyres are fine!"

Nice to hear my beloved bus is looked after 'eh? (not).

Got my practicle test on 29/09/08, so God willing, I'll have my pride and joy back in October. (long story...don't ask)

Thank you Pete for showing an interest ..... greatly appreciated.

'Terry's old bus' has been with me for the last 18 months or so.

It now has an AAZ engine and a reconned turbo to keep the oil in. Drive shafts and rear brakes all rebuilt. Interior converted to Multivan seating and two windows; partway through interior trimming.

No yellow wheels, though!
