I didnt want to hog another thread so i started a new one...
Im wondering what route to go with a gearbox for an AAZ.

Shows me lots of figured for the different gearboxes - i would quite like to get this in excel so i can filter it (i'll do it myself if no one has done it and then post it here).

Doka90 indicates he gets a lot better performance from his AAP box than his 1.6td 3h box.
Now looking at the above table, it appears to me that the ratios are exactly the same - its only the final drive which is different.
This leads to the question "What does the final drive figure mean?"

Now driving a big bad VW LT Florida.
The actual torque ratio thru a gearbox is the product of the individual gear ratio x the final drive ratio (FDR). Physically, the FDR is the component that connects to and puts torque out onto the drive shafts - also known as the differential.
As i undestand it, VW generally used the same gear ratios for 1,2,3 and usually 4 too but just changed the FDR. Your link confirms this.

for the five speeds the gearsets are the same, just the final drive ratio varies (mostly - there are exceptions I know) but for the 4 speeds and syncros (which are effectively four speeds though actually five speeds) VW used the 0.78 top gear to save flogging the TD to death. For your AAZs the best economy/speed/cruiser is a petrol 4.57 fd box witha 0.78 TD top gear or higher Albins gear. On a five speed you just change top gear as you already have a 1.02 fourth gear, on a four speed you change 3rd and 4th if going higher than 0.78 in order to even the spread of gears.
I've built a few TD geared boxes for peeps using both the 0.78 VW gear and the Albins gears.
However I have no spare 0.78 gears these are rocking horse pooh and often foobarred by people pulling 1000 rpm in top cos their torquey tractor engine can. The 091/1 and 094 gearboxes were originally designed for the waterboxer and NA Diesels which rev longer than the TDs, if you lug them they will break as the torque load is a bit beyond the design capacity. Try and keep in the green rev band, and change down if necessary if you want to keep the box for long is top tip.
T4 5 speeds are reknowned for loosing top gear too for the same reason.
Final drive ratio is the gear ratio of the crown and pinion gears which drive the differential and thus the wheels. Multiply the fd by the actual gear to get the overall gear ratio..check out the spreadsheet for the syncro boxes which is in the syncronauts section.

Is a final drive integral to a gear box or can it be changed?
I have a dilemma:
I have a AAZ on a 5 speed (AAS i think) in my panel van and a 4 speed (APF i think) in my camper with a 1Y 1.9 engine.
Im about to swap over the engines between the two vans (i want the AAZ in my camper) but am wondering what to do about the gear boxes.
Bearing in mind im not sure if i can just change the gearboxes (5-4 speed linkages and 5-4 speed linkages compatibility) without changing the linkages (1.6td panel van has the raised bit in the middle of the cab and the camper doesnt).
So, can i swap them, or should i just get a recconed 4 speed DK (2L Aircooled) or similar?
Dont mind spending a bit of cash - i just want the right match with the AAZ for my camper.

AAS is a 1.6 TD 5 speed witha LSD and 4.83 final drive and 0.82 top gear, ABF is a 1.6NA 4 speed witha 5.83 and 0.85 top gear
Swap the boxes with the engine just remove the TD tunnel bracket from the gearstick box and swap over the linkages
Why do people think the DK is so good, it's an Aircooled box designed for Aircooled engines and has smaller gears and bearings than the watercooled box,and is much more obsolete, ok it has 4.57/0.82 but a proper TD 4 speed ABH has the 0.78 gear and 4.83...pretty close and correct for the engine.
VW didn't build a 1.9TD T25 but if they had they would have changed the top gear/fd ratios to suit.
The gearbox is built around the pinion shaft so the fd can only be changed as part of a rebuild, but then you can go four pinion diff/locking diff/lsd 4.57 + 0.70 or 0.73 or 0.77 or 0.78 depending on vehicle type engine and tyre size to get the best compromise. Assuming of course there are any good 4.57 c and p sets left anywhere
