According to my owners manual, 1.9 WBXr start procedure with a warm engine - 'depress pedal slowly, hold then start! Pull down choke can cause probs and the common problems that affect all engines. Check the airfilter too!

Petrol gauge does meander a bit but slowly, inclines etc. Might be a poor connection somewhere or the voltage stabiliser is duff. Is the temp gauge steady?

Hello msmallc
My petrol gauge is a bit hit and miss too. The level can vary a lot after going around a corner or going uphill etc....I'm sort of used to it and as a rule know how much I've got left.
As for starting...First thing in the morning I will press the pedal slowly down, release it and then start it....restarting after, when it's still a little warm, I don't touch the pedal (If I do, it wont start or it wont run properly)
Having said that, my carb has been playing up lately as mentioned in another thread

Our petrol guage wanders around on corners and slopes etc as well. If you keep the level in the tank high, by topping up regularly, you'll be ok and it'll also avoid any debris that is likely to be lying in the bottom of an old tank being sucked into the fuel line and carb etc which would cause running problems. You might want to check the condition of the pipes that run to the breather tanks under each front wheel arch though.

its a flat oblong tank with no baffles, and a couple of real odd dips and hills, it aint never going to be rock steady readings........ if you are used to a newer car type thing, youll be forever worrying about it ........dont
