Camped out with the kids at last!

Post by tranny »

Hi all
I went out with the kids, found a nice place somewhere just outside of Brecon, don't ask me where but it was nice lol
We cooked bacon and sausages and had cups of tea and as it was getting dark we put the bed down and the overhead bed up too and settled down for the night. It was well dark and a bit scary but the boys loved it.
I did have a bit of a problem though, when I went to start off in the morning I had nothing, no power to anything and just a click when trying to start but seemed after about ten minutes it was all ok again I know I should really put that bit on the technical page but am worried as I know nothing about mechanics and I might get all manner of scary things told me and I won't be able to do them lol Oh and by the way Steve, I haven't done the dip stick yet but I will do it! And another thing, AngeloEvs, I saw your photo on garage and I think my van is the same model as yours but I forget how to upload the pictures I took and can't seem to get them on here now but I will keep trying.
Cheers. Joy :)

well done on your trip - i had a similar problem with the click and no turn over - turned out to be a dirty electrical connection at the rear of the engine - give it a bit of a clean and its not done it since!
Just bumbling through life, now with a big black Greyhound to help fill the van....

it could be the connections on the starter, if it does it again, stick your arm in the driverside rear wheel arch, and "wiggle " the small spade connected wire on the starter motor, its a common thing......
it could also be the ignition switch.........

If your bus is Aircooled it could also be the bearing the starter motor sits in. I think it's brass and over time it wears into an oval shape and eventually the starter sticks and you get the click. To get it going again bump start it or just try putting it in gear and giving the van a wee shove. Not much mind. Just enough to jar the starter. Then try to start it as normal.
Cheers
Rob.

re click on start

First thing to check should be the battery terminals, dry and coroded terminals can cause all sorts of trouble, just remove both leads clean each terminal with emery cloth, cover terminals with vaseline and replace leads. This is such a simple /stupid thing that it often gets over looked.

Hi AngeloEvs, Yes it's great to have all of these people who know so much about the vans we all love. Did you see the pics I posted with the help of lots of people, not very many but I did try and borrow my sons digital camera but he was out today so I will borrow it tomorrow and post some better ones . Grun that was so helpful of you to post each step on how to upload photos, thank you so much and to you Slobbo, thanks for your input re my losing power on the van and also to you noss vanagon, I did notice that the battery terminals were a bit rusty and dirty and need a clean so I will do that tomorrow as it won't matter if it pours down as battery inside the van lol Before I forget, Mocki, just to let you know I did try and replace that dip stick that you so kindly sent to me but it poured down on me and the kids wanted to watch me and were getting soaked so I had to leave it even though I think it was about to come out lol
Thanks everso much to all who replied to me, makes me feel that I am not alone even though I am alone out here with the kids in deepest darkest Wales in the rain LOL
Cheers guys. Joy :D
