Bad starting when engine warm

My Syncro starts fine first time in the morning but once it's been running and warmed it takes several attempts to get it to fire up again if I've switched it off, and when it does start there's a sizeable cloud of dark smoke. It's a '89 model with a 1.6JX motor.

Any ideas please?

I got the same probs. With me new engine and the old one. I crank the engine over, after aprox 3-4 seconds then yank out the cold start. She fires up straight away then every time, just like when shes cold. Yes you get a cloud of smoke which I presume is the unburnt fuel being burnt off. It aint hurtin nowt but is great in Sainsburys carpark when the old Grannies are walking past!!

I often get that from my JX, pulling out the choke/cold start when warm starting works for me, pull it out before turning the key and I get very little smoke. It was suggested it might be a problem with injectors or fuel system but that meant changing out this, that and the other at great expense ... I'll stick with the cold start method till something breaks!
