gears
I'm having trouble selecting gears. It seems to be at it's worst going between 2nd and 3rd. Does anyone know what could be causing this and how I could fix it?[/i]

"Noss vanagon" started a thread a short time ago on greasing gear linkage. I found the thread very useful and tried it out. Worked for me.
Try it...nothing ventured, nothing gained. It was very easy to do and took about twenty minutes all in.

Right, thanks for all the replies greased the ball joints and linkage today in the pissing rain and it's a lot better, still not 100% but definitely better. Some said that it might be the bushes. I haven't the faintest idea where these are or how to change them. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
clartsonly, checked and I can honestly say my knob is round the right way. Thank god

assuming it's watercooled there are two nylon bushes, one on the front part of the selector rods, sandwhiched in the chasis and one at the back on a plate attached to the gearbox. The early vans have the same bush front and back and the back one wears as it has no protection, on the later van they cahanged the bush and gave it boots. Take a look at JK parts catalogue or Etka to see exploded diagram.
The late rear bush went obsolete from VW in April, I don't know about the early (and front) one.
Quick trick is crack the nuts on the two M8s holding the plate to the box, then push the socket up into the cup (there should be a rubber boot keeping the cup and ball lubricant clean, if split or missing then crud is a problem) and nip up the nuts and see if that's better. The boot tends to split but it's £4 and well worth it - if it's stuffed you'll have to lower the rear selector rod and clean up the cup, add lube(moly or poly )and fit the boot to the ball, then mate them by pulling the skirt over the cup and refit to the box, jobs a good un.
