Swapping 907 for 4.5kg butane bottle- any issues?

Post by wastedwardy »

Hi all -
I'm thinking about swapping my existing 907 gas bottle in the van for a 4.5kg one - obviously they're different regulators, but can anyone think of any other issues (assuming it'll fit)

Ta,

WW

Just the usual - propex, 2 burner stove and fridge. I've got a couple of regulators going spare for the butane (and the bottle will be in the can, so I'm assuming the freezing thing shouldn't be an issue)

You can buy an adaptor for the 4.5kg and the new regulator will then fit both bottles. The little uns are useful as a back up or if you are just going out for a day trip and don't need the big 4.5Kg. Never had a prob with Butane freezing if the bottles in the van so the extra capacity is def. worth while.

I had to use mine three nights a week, every week (since October), I had lots of heating though! Hell James, never mind the bottle freezing how did you survive without a heater? (no references to me being a wimp either!) Last thought......it ain't called dubfreeze for nothing, thats for sure.

We've had problems with butane not vapourising at low temperatures when winter camping as well. With the bottle wrapped in bubblewrap etc and in a cupboard in the van.

Problem isn't just the outside temp.. or inside van temp. It's the fact that as gas is used from bottle, it caused bottle to get colder. I've seen heavy use fo gas from propane tanks in summer sun have frost on them for this reason. Winter camping at near 0 outside, maybe 10-15 inside, high demand on bottle to keep van warm, and tank gets very cold. Butane won't vaporize below -.55 so if bottle is -1 or below, you have no vapor for your propex to burn.

what conversion? if its a Autohomes it wont fit in the cupboard, too tall. I lay it down with a wedge for transport then stand it up under the bed when in use, I think strictly its supposed to be in its own cupboard.

Temp in my van never fell below 15 at floor level, (wouldn't be able to survive any temp lower than that), but used to leave the gas bottle cupboard open and that seemed to do the trick. Mind you, I was using a 2.2Kw heater. :P

They will fit in a Autohomes, raise the compartment height.

recon the only prob you will realistically is what will you spend the difference on, (1/2 another 4.5 kg bottle?)

mine never froze at DF, but then i have diesel heating, so the gas dont have to exit the bottle only when the kettle is on!!

When gas consumption goes up with use of heater in cold weather and cools bottle, the bubble wrap will actually cause bottle to get colder because bubble wrap insulates bottle keeping cold in and not letting air tem in van warm it.
