Sorry about slow reply - have had to re-register as my account went inactive after altering email.
Anyway its a 1985 1.9 petrol watercooled.

There have been a few posts about the expansion tanks over the years, you could try searching.
Some people have removed the expansion tanks and have no problems, some people swear blind they are absolutely essential.

The tanks are there for fuel and vapour expansion.
Mr VW designed a fuel tank that is U shaped, for the arms of the U to fill properly, lots of breather pipes and seals are needed, most of which will have rotted away over the last 20 years or so.

My view is if VW fitted them, I'll fix them or replace them when they break.
