tdi conversions

Post by swell2316 »

Hello all,
I.m trying to find a workshop in the south that could carry out a tdi conversion on my 87 Multivan. I'm particularly interested in a 2.5 tdi if it's possible but failing that a 1.9 tdi 130 ps.

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic?

Many thanks.

Philippacman in North Wales is a Tdi specialist, but not sure if that's too far for you to travel. He really knows his stuff

130ps is a PD lump, it's a bit more unsuitable than the normal 1Z or AFN.
the normal VE EDC type TDI's are a little unsuitable unless you are willing to spend over a grand on your gearbox as they produce their torque much lower down the rev range, a PD engine produces it's torque lower still, plus you would beed most of a car to carry out the conversion
Basically, what I am saying is unless the van is real tidy and money is no object then don't bother, fit an earleier TDI as your job would be much simpler.
2.5TDIs are possible, but, remember that fitting such a specialised engine like that you need to know how to fix it when it goes wrong and no one in a garage will touch it, and if you are asking for someone else to put it in for you then I don't think this would be the right thing for you to do.
If you have a few grand to spare, then get a TDI fitted and have it tuned, you can get 130hp out of them without too much hassle but it will be heavy on gearboxes.
remember that there are lots of nasty TDI conversions out there...

Thanks for the stear guys. Simon what vehicle holds the engine i should be looking for? and is there nothing I can do to eleviate the gear box dramas that come with the new engine? I checked the website below and he's advertising a 150ps convesion that must be a real gear muncher.

Thanks again guys.
