I fitted a 1Y engine into my van a while ago to replace the stock 1.6d. Works well and goes much better. But the economy has suffered. I was getting up to 50mpg with the old unit and am now down in the low 30's.
I am thinking to stick the old 1.6 pump on the 1Y engine and see if this helps (ok I might lose a bit of power) I did fit and run this pump when I installed the 1Y and it ran up ok (it would not rev but I found the reason)
I know some guys on here use the 1.6 pump on a 1Y how do you find the economy / Power.
1Y using a 1.6d pump.

I fitted a 1Y engine recently and am getting good mileage aprox 40mpg.The van was a 1.6td so i needed to get inlet&exhuast manifolds to run it normal asparated.I used a 1.6n inlet and airbox used the 1Y exhaust manifold and fabricated the 1.6td down pipe to fit.The down pipe then fits to the existing 1.6td exhaust box.Could the good mpg be down to the 1Y exhaust manifold set up.Oh timing is spot on. http://www.vwdieselparts.com/forum/index.php on this site there are topics that discribe using 1.6n injection pumps on 1.9 engines.
