Normal operation.
Van locked.
Tailgate key turned 1/8 turn right. Press button.

Van unlocked.
Tailgate key turned 1/4 turn left. Press button.

On the lock inside the tailgate is an inverted Y shaped metal slider that slides accross depending on central locking status. Check this is sliding freely.
The button pushes on one of the slanted prongs. Which one depends on central locking.
The vertical prong releases the lock.

I 'locked' the lock (keeping the tailgate open) using a scredriver in the part that grips the post on the van body.
Icould then see what was happening and rech the release button.

You have gone and put the hex on mine now.
After fixing the actuator a few weeks ago the lock has worked perfectly
but since reading this post ..... The Bugger wont work.

check the connections, it's common to find grotty connections due to condensation in the tailgate void
