A short to earth in the wire (yellow/red) from the gauge to the temperature sensor, (or a faulty sensor causing a short circuit) would have the same effect I think.

Sensor (sender) is fitted into the plastic thermostat housing of a 2.1 not sure of 1.9.

Plenty of posts on this type of fault.......... have a trawl...... and look in the wiki (top of page)

nope! this is the low coolant level part of the system, not high temp, it is not signalling to the gauge, only the warning light......

id say either the temp gauge sender in the thermostat housing, or a short in the wire to earth ( melted near zorst possible) or crud in the plugs in the wiring
