SMOKING EBERSPACHER
I have a 1988 1.6 turbo ddiesel club joker, with the diesel eberspacher heater located under the van, and the heat exits from under the rear seat. well not only do i get heat but also fumes. and if it wernt for the dogs waking us up during the night i probably wouldent be writing this letter. anyway dose anybody know the model number? and what may be causing the fumes and if there is any info-plans-diagrams out there for a total strip down and clean any help would be gratefully received thanks AL.

Yes that caps thing is a bit of a twitchy subject. Funny how all sorts of revolting and clearly illegal stuff is tolerated and someone comes on a bit short on web etiquette and howls of disgust appear. I guess you should take that on board though.ALBEBLOWED wrote:I ANY HELP WOULD BE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED THANKS. AL
Anyway: I am only familiar with the Propex gas powered heater but the main operating principle of these heaters is similar and highlighted by this extract from Eberspacher:
The fresh air fan draws in cold air for heating; quite separate from the combustion process. This air passes over the sealed, finned heat exchanger and under pressure, passes through the duct work. This delivers the warm air which is automatically controlled to give your desired temperature.
In a properly installed setup it is virtually impossible for anything which didn't go in through the cold air intake to be coming out of the warm air exhaust. You are therefore either sucking those "fumes" in through the cold air intake, heating or burning something in the heat exchanger or your heat exchanger is compromised in some way and allowing combustion products into the warm air outlet. The combustion and warm air systems should be absolutely isolated in terms of hermesticity. I know you know you need to physically check the whole system. You are frightening me and I take a bit of frightening! Lucky it smells really as Carbon Monoxide is apparently devoid of smell! Any chance of a shop at what it smells of?
Regards
Ken

No not on here! sorry if that is what I seemed to say. I meant email and webwise in general. It appeared to me that the capitalist just didn't know how serious an error he was perpetrating. I never even managed "O" level English but even in my East End of London world of core blimey I cringe at stuff likethe use of only one "O" in the term "too much"!
Sorry gov.

Have a look on the wiki ^^^^ , i stripped/cleaned and re-gasketted my dl1c
Its a dirty job but quite easy , also check the exhaust and the air-intake on the unit
If it coming into the cab then it could be the sealing gasket between the fan housing and combustion chamber , all available from your local ebber specialist
