sticking throttle on auto DG, help please

Post by doodlebug »

1987 VW caravelle transporter 2 litre Automatic

Has anyone out there got any ideas to solve our problem;our automatic VW caravelle has a 'sticking' throttle cable, causing excessive over reving-we replaced the cable thinking that was the problem but it is still sticking

there isnt a 2l unless its Aircooled, a CU, which isnt correct for your stated year, so is it a 1.9 dg , 1.9 df , 1.9 dh or 2.1 dj, 2.1 mv, 2.1 ss

the engine number is easy to see, at the bottom of the oil breather tower, next to the alternator, squit through the numberplate flap, and its on the flat square base of the breather tower........then we can try and help

ok, so now we know its a carb the cable is going to....... good

is the cable fouling the inlet manifold, or the cable outer where it comes through the baulkhead?

was it reassembled correctly when new cable put on? the circlip onto the end of the outer?

When the vehicle is stationary the rod that connects to the carb, seems to go forward as though the weight of the arm is pushing the cable forward causing the over reving

The linkage usually siezes on the side of the gearbox.
fairly common for auto vans that aren't used much.
Could also be cable, buy one quick from VW before they go obsolete.

Funny you should say that - mine went the other day. Have a look at the return spring on the cable towards the engine. That had gone on mine.

We did put a new accelerator cable on,it was correctly adjusted and worked O.K then after only a few miles;it started over reving and sticking-if we adjust it any more it will roll backwards on a hill
