Help An Idiot Out!

Post by BorderReiver »

Hello Everyone

I wonder if I might pick your collective brains for VW based Wisdom.

I am an Autograss racer and, to my shame (and increasing feeling of inadequacy) I know very little of VW and their Vans. This vacuum in my brain has led to a problem I hope you good people will be able to help me with.

Last month my clutch broke (two days before the Scottish Open, which is always the way) resulting in me having a racing car that remained staunchly in neutral. Great if you want to make a noise, not so great if you want to go racing.

Anyway, I pulled everything off the subframe until I reached the clutch and, upon opening up the unit, discovered the problem. (Or at least what I believed to be the problem, since I'm not that great a mechanic).

The bolt-holes in the Bell-housing that hold the release bearing tight had stripped, meaning that the whole assembly was out of whack, and the activating lever had simply slid past it and into oblivion, resulting in a nicely jammed up clutch.

So, it looked very much like I'd need a new bell-housing.

Who made the original? Upon inspection of the case I discovered it bore the VW-Audi markings and the ID read;

1 GERMANY
091-301-107-C

Now, here my lack of knowledge reared it's ugly head. I have no idea which model that part number pertains to, and when I search for it in Google the only pages I get (which are few) are in German, and my German is worse than my mechanics (which is saying something).

A friend of mine, who looked it over, suggested that he thought it looked like a VW Transporter assembly, and that's really all I have to go off.

So, what I'd humbly ask is, is this a transporter unit? If so, which model does my bell-housing come from? And would any of you know where I might acquire a new one?

Now obviously I know that this forum deals in 80-90 Transporters, and even an idiot like me is aware that VW have been producing various types for a much larger chunk of time that that sole decade, but a guy I met on another forum recommended this place as somewhere I might find people who really knew their stuff.

I'm sorry to plague you with what must seem extremely stupid questions, but I need to find a new unit by the end of July or miss the next race too. Any help and advice would be really REALLY appreciated.

Here's a picture of the unit if it helps :).

Try a VW main dealer.

Mine can tell we what something is from the vag no, even if its obsolete

They may be able to tell you what its off

then click on "used T3 parts" link on left hand side , you will find out how to find the gearbox code

then click on this

http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... fo/gbx.htm

and it will tell you what model/year it is IF it is a T3 box. sure some anorak will be able to ID it just by looking at casting casting..................

Well I may have missed the boat on this one as I have been away however:
I managed to get a very tricky part for the selectors on my T25 five speed geerbox from these people: Bear at 964 Old Lode Lane Solihull B92 8LN. Ask for Paul on 0121 742 2200. They are involved in performance transmissions and seem to specialise in these types of units. I would be very surprised if they couldn't help as I found them just so knowledgable and easy to get on with.
Good luck
