significant oil consumption 1.6td

Post by swell2316 »

Hello all, I have a problem with oil consumption. I have recently had a new turbo fitted, since then I have not done a great deal of miles but a few weeks back I did a long run from the south coast to the north and back. Following this run the oil buzzer came on and I found the oil level was on min. I filled it back up and monitored the consumption over the next few weeks over differing distances and found oil consumption to be at an unacceptable level. I took the vehicle back to garage that fitted the turbo and suggested that there may be a problem, I explained that I didn't think the consumption was be due to excessive engine wear as starting is very good and that my suspicions were drawn to the turbo. The garage has had the vehicle 2 weeks now and tell me they can find no problem but were going to consult their turbo gurus. Are my suspicions correct or am I barking up the wrong tree :?
your advice would be greatly appreciated.

When my turbo went it was getting through oil like a good un (before final death throws it was 1l/100 miles!
If absolutley nothing has changed ie didnt have same excessive oil consumption before new turbo i would go with your guess and say new turbo is suspect.Has a compression/leak down test been done ?
When new turbo was fitted were the pipes cleaned ? Maybe if you take the turbo/inlet manifold pipe off it will give you a clue :?:

Whats the oil presure like? If the oil pump aint pumpin oil under presure to the turbo then its possible to kill a new one quickly. I know, it happened to me. New engine cured it with new turo. Costly but you soon forget that when back on the road and alls well.

After leaving the wagon 2 weeks at the garage I was told they couldn't find any problems. I took the wagon back to mine and got under it straight away. first of all I separated the boost pipe at it's lowest point and out poured about an egg cup full of oil. I then traced all the pipes feeding into the boost pipe and found that there is one that feeds into it from the rocker cover. I removed the mushroom type thingy from the cover and tipped it and out poured even more oil. I am now thinking that oil is being blown from the rocker assembly into this mushroom and down into the boost pipe and then being burnt via the turbo. Are there any mechanical types out there that can shed any light on this problem? Is it possible? what is causing this etc? My summer leave is fast approaching and I would like to use the van so all early replies would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all who replied previously.
