If it's a 1.9 petrol there's 3 types :-

early (pre '86 ?)
late (86 > 91)
late with oil cooler (has extra spigot)

Many if not most late pumps have the capacity to add or blank off the extra spigot though. The ones fom GSF are this kind.

Sound's like your garage wasn't very keen on doing the job to me

Just done mine as Ian has said that with the GSF one you get a blanking bolt (check under the warranty card there will be a bag under that  )
It is a fairly easy DIY job but the small pipe that goes across the rear of the engine is a little fiddly. Fit new jubilee clips facing where you can get to them.

hi ian thanks for your reply.that is exactly what i thought too.i think it maybe 86 onwards its got the dougnut air filter it is a reconditioned motor put in by previous owner.i dont want to buy cheap and then buy twice so any information regarding decent parts and where to get them is much appreciated also the main water pipe is allen keyed onto water pump has opposed to two pipes feeding into pump

Hi there,

I recently fitted a new water pump to my 1.9 DG, fairly straight forward job just take your time.....hardest part was undoing crankshaft pulley nut so i could make access easier - you can then get at those allen bolts!

I used a genuine VW pump but was surprised at the price, about £40, this did not include the £35 exchange price as they wanted the old one back, guess they recon them? It comes with all the gaskets and rubber seals you need.

Get yourself as much G12 anti freeze as you can carry as well, it takes loads, and cover everything that you screw back on in copaslip! Have fun bleeding the system........bleeding system!

Good luck.

You don't need to take the pulley off, it's fiddly but tis the way of things.

The big metal pipe from the pump to the thermostat housing is usually held on with Allen (socket head) bolts. This pipe is VERY prone to decay, while it's off study it VERY carefully, especially where the little pipe joins and along the bottom. If in any doubt replace this too.

GSF water pump is fine.

Good luck  Ian.

its fiddly with the crank pully on but doable with a woggle drive and 1/4" socket set..
G12, dont bother unless you are minted... get a good brand of coolant and use that.. the system holds 17L ish, and pref use demin water to mix, unless you buy ready mixed coolant.. if you are carefull, you can bung the hoses and not have to refill too much..
