I've got an '83 Westy and the original 1.6 non turbo diesel has just died.
According to our mechanic the cam tensioner broke, and had an effect all the way down the drive train to the point where the piston has damaged the valves and head.
This leaves me looking for a new / old engine.
I really want to keep things stock-ish and I've read on the brickyard that Golf Jetta and Caddy 1.6 non turbo engines will pretty much go straight in. Has anyone done this and if so what are the pitfalls?

I bought a Passat engine for £40 4 years ago and it is still going well however it might be worth you looking at a 1y conversion they are pretty cheap and go straight in by all accounts.
There were loads of 1.6d for sale on this forum a month ago - maybe a quick search and a post in "Wanted" ?
TBH, i would stick a 1.9 1Y in. If you get a golf or jetta engine then you will have to do exactly the same things (ie change the ancillaries over from you 1.6d to the newer engine).
Might as well go for the 1.9 1Y - dead easy to come by, and cheap too.
You dont get any changes top end due to the gearbox, but you get more grunt up hills.
I have a cracking 1.6d here to give away. (Gloucester) but for the love of god fit a 1.9d. So much better. However the 1.6 is so economical it unreal, not done a mpg test on my 1.9 yet, don't think I want to know.
dunno what my 1.7D should ever have got MPG wise as it was dead when i got it. however crusing at 55-60 my tin top camper does 48MPG. if a 1.7/1.6 is better than that. at these diesel prices, i might swtch back!

1y from seat ibiza timing etc as standard although im gunna set it to 1mm adv this summers run to italy, i wonder how that will affect mpgs/power/right foot(speed!)

Thought mine did well at 37mpg on a run (hightop with 1.9aef)
