How thick is yer shaft?

Post by Simon Baxter »

Seemingly, there seems to be 2 different diameter gear levers.
I've been selling the repair kit from VW to fit all models, but occasionally there seems to be some 12mm shafted vehicles about rather than the 14mm than we're used to.
Anyone know if it's a syncro/early 2WD thing?
As it happens, I have some gearlever repair kits for these thinner shafted vehicles, just trying to get my head around what came with what!

Both my very early wbx velle (May 1983) and late syncro doka (1992) have 14mm levers, both LHD.. and as far as I am aware the velle hasnt had a different lever (130k km when I got it..)

Mikes TriStar has a 12mm shaft, as does a customer with a early Diesel (82)
Also, customer rang the other day, he measured his at 12mm too.
just making me think that theres more of the rogues than I thought.
I had a look at ETKA and could only see one kit, but it was a quick look it has to be said!
At least I have found another supply for most of the kit if VW discontinue the ones they sell now, if they do I think you would only have to re-use 1, possibly 2 parts of the original parts.

Cheers.
Now, I'm kinda wondering, because the early vans share the syncro gearstick, I'm wondering if Mikes was a rogue and fitted with a early 2WD shaft.

Right, sussed it I think.
It's basically air cooled and early Diesel have the 12mm lever, up to chassis number 24(or25) C 200 000.
Then, it seems like they carried on with it for a little longer on S799, which appears to be Aircooled injection engines.
Seemingly these ran from 24D 000 001 to 24D 051 380.
All others should have 14mm dia gear lever.
So, Looks like someone fitted a Aircooled gearlever to Mikes TriStar.
I'm off to E D I T my webshop!
You live and learn eh!
