gearbox filler/drain seals

Post by beachiain »

I've an 84 caravelle, 1.9 DF engine and a 5 speed box, which sounds a bit whiney at the mo so want to change the gearbox oil. Couldn't see anything in the Haynes manual but I'm guessing there's copper seal rings for both the drain and the filler, if anyone's got part numbers or know's where I can get these I'd appreciate your help. Don't want to start taking stuff apart without having the right bits and pieces to put it back together :D
When it stops making that noise I'll be worried. That means it's fallen off.

No seals, they are a taper fit.. make sure the filler comes undone before draining..

If the noise doesnt stop then you are looking at a bearing on its way out.. keep driving it and the box will be total scrap very quickly..

17mm hex Allen key OR an M10 bolt with nuts tightened all the way up and a 17mm spanner.

As Si say's make sure the fill (side) plug undo's BEFORE removing the drain plug

Unless you happen to work for a VW dealer or a gearbox specialist its not a bearing you can change.. entrust that to the man below...

changed the gearbox oil, still whines about 50mph. Can't figure out whether it's gearbox or drive shafts whining, need to get someone to drive while I play around in the back listening to where the noise is coming from.

If its a "howl" then diff.. driveshafts dont make whining noises.. could be the main bearing or the output bearings.. (amongst others) either will alow the diff to be out of alignement and start eating itself...

Anyone any tips on checking the transmission? Just want to check before going to the extent of reconning the gearbox, was thinking about changing the rear CV's first to see if it makes a difference.

Your choice to spend cash on the cvs and the time to do them with no result.. worth doing if they are clicking or boots split... but wont cure the howl... (if thats what it is!!)

Try to lift and push and pull the output flanges when the CV's are off.. play could be the flange on the pinion shafts or, in out play will be the output bearings..

One cautionary thing, in its current state it may go for a while longer and is currently most likely rebiuldable for sensible costs, once it breaks and wont do anything, then its a different story.. more and more parts are going obsolete and good used gearboxes are getting harder to find, Aidan has a large pile of scrap parts biulding from boxes that were "working"...

Thanks for the info, I've just had a look around under it and one of the CV boots is split, plenty of grease on the surrounding area's. I'll change that and then go for the gearbox work if necessary. If I end up going for the gearbox work there will still be a constant whine 'cause it means cancelling a week's camping in Scotland and someone's not going to be happy...
