Timing question....My Hanes is confusing me (nothing new)

Post by KarlT »

On tick-over (800rpm) should the little 'V' in pulley wheel line up with centre line of engine block. Or should it be 5' ahead (95* petrol)?

Engine?
U shaped one is TDC (outer of the pulley)
V shaped will either 5 Deg on a DG/DF/MV (and late/refurbed DJ from VW)
Or 10Deg on a DJ

Timing must be done with the vac disconnected and plugged..

it depends on the engine - DF is supposed to be TDC with the ISU bypassed, although I think my idle is more like 1100 so it is about 5 degree before as it stumbled and spluttered to a halt whenever it was timed to the haynes.

Sorry, thought all 2.1 would be the same.

Its a DJ with a double vac dizzy.

I thought I must be doing something wrong as it doesn't like the 'V' lined up, I've put the 'V' about 5' to the left of engine block join.

Is this correct?

If it were me, I would do something different......

I dont have the manual in front of me so cant comment on the haynes description but it should be good...

Its only 10 deg if running on 97/98/99UL........ NOT 95... thats only 5 deg..

Its the procedure for timing I think hes having trouble with.. Those daft double vac units.. I junked the last double one that was faulty and fitted a std single vac one...

Did you diconnect the idling stabiliser and join the plugs together before you adjusted the timing.
