Starter, Or Inhibitor Switch?

Post by PRHPaul »

Hi

Anyone any ideas as to why my van won't turnover and start?

It's a 2.1MV Auto.

It's been struggling to start recently as the starter motor wouldn't turn at all and it would only go if it was jump started. After a long run it would turn over, very slowly, but wouldn't fire - just a flat battery during the cold snap it would seem...

Finally had some time to have a proper look today, even charged the battery up fully overnight and cleaned all the connections and earth straps to the starter. Put the battery back in and whilst it is fully charged with plenty of power getting to the starter and the fuel system priming itself up, it won't turn over at all, not even with the usual jump start.

I have two thoughts then: -

1. Either the starter motor is up the spout, or as there is no click or sound coming from the relay, that the starter relay could be knackered??

If so, is there anyway to check it for certain whilst it's off the van and if it is dead, does anyone have a starter and solenoid suitable for a 2.1MV Auto and how much??

2. The other slightly more obscure thought relates to the van being an Auto. I assume there is some form of starter inhibitor switch which prevents the starter from turning if it is any kind of 'drive' gear?? - obviously it would only start normally when in park. The Haynes manual for my old a/c van talks about an inhibitor witch on an auto, but there is no mention of such a thing in the w/c manual??

I have given the gear selector a good old waggle and tried it in different positions, but still no joy. I had a similar problem once in the summer when for a very brief moment it wouldn't turn over, but didn't give it much more thought after that and it didn't re-occur.

If there is a 'starter inhibitor switch', where is it? What does it look like? And how can I check and fix it???

Any help in getting me back on the road would as ever, be greatly appreciated. :? :?

the inhibitor is on the stick mount, in the cab, and is a simple on off switch, so should be easy to test....

You have checked the starter solenoid signal wire connection havent you, the spade often rots and whilst the ternimal is connected, and feels tight, it is not conecting...

this will not make the starter turn slowly, it will be not at all, sometimes, other times ok?

also check the solenoid out of the problem by bypassing it on the starter motor main connections .

Thanks Mocki

Not certain where the inhibitor switch is though?? The Haynes manual doesn't show anything!!!

Is it somewhere within the actual handle on the top of the gear lever and something to do with the push button on this, or is it somewhere within the lever mechanism/console??
