Westfalia Gas Tank

Post by blancowesty »

Am concerned about the condition of my 1990 Westy gas tank.
There is a more rust on the outside than I would like.

Have found a German web site that supplies new replacement tanks (mega dosh - but nothings to good for the Westy).

They also supply a replacement (plastic?) cover but they tell I will "need to restore the current steel bracket cage" that protects the contents guage, pipes and refill connector.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any experience or advice on this subject

Thanks - BlancoWesty

Thanks for the responses.

1 - Tank could, as you say, be cleaned up and painted. This is "Her Indoors" option - to be truthfull it's a "Don't bother".

2 - Have seen the GOWESTY web site but the tank looks very different to the one under mine. The Gowesty on looks long and very thin and if you read their "Full Article" about life span, legislation, and replacement you will be scared.

The German site is Gunzle www.vwbusshop.de and their tank is three times the price of the Gowesty one.

3 - Will give Steve Shaw a call on this matter

Cheers

The cover fits to the steel frame that`s bolted to your original tank round the gauge and taps etc, it`s an easy swap-over form the old to the new tank.
Keep it real.

The US Spec ones (made by Manchester)are a different shape and capacity to the German ones, also Steve Shaws ones are completely different, see the pictures on his website http://www.gasure.co.uk/leisure.htm If you don't mind about originality this would be the best option - I have a black 20kg leisure tank fitted by Pete Rustybus, best thing I've fitted to my van, filling is a breeze. Have you asked at a caravan place if they could refurb your tank ?
