are all steering wheels the same??

Post by dirtygertie »

More questions!!!!!!!

when we bought our '82 2l Aircooled, it had a piddly little sports steeing wheel fitted with an adaptor to make it higher.

the guy also gave us what he described as the original steering wheel - defo vw, defo a van one cos its big. I think he either had it as a spare when he bought the van or purchased it later.

trying to fit it today & it won't push down enough to allow the splines to engage.

have i got the wrong wheel?

this is the wheel

it doesn't look as if they've beed modified, but then i wouldn't rule anything out as far as this van is concerned.

we've put the silly small wheel back on for now, but i'll take a photo when i get the chance to remove it - unless anyone can offer a pic of what it should look like.....

If it is a slightly tighter fit as you pushed it down does it push the joint apart at the bottom of the column by the pedals as that looks like a standard wheel. U'll know if this is what happens as the column can slide down as you push it on. Also double check that the horn push is the same as it may be an LT wheel or something? Good Luck!

will have another look tomorrow to see if there are any spacers.

I agree mocki, 'tis not the most desireable object but its the lesser of two evils, the wheel on at the moment is like steering with a 2p piece & with no power steering and my feeble girlie arms  I'm afraid its straight lines only!

.........I'm starting to feel a little defeted by this van! :(

My silly little wheel has spacers fitted underneath the switch gear (indicator and headlamp switches) to raise them in order that the self cancel works properly on the indicators.
If yours is the same then you certainly would struggle getting the original wheel fitted,
Just take out the 3 long screws, pull up the switches and use a pair of pointy pliers (snipe nose) to remove the spacers.

I love my big steering wheels!!

Go the thick one on the velle, and the skinny one on the camper - I enjoy driving with both of them. The skinny one is better though - feels less like a car wheel!

Not orrible, Mocki!!
