Zig Unit all run off the vehicle battery?

Hello, please can I have some advice...

I have just got a 1985 T25 Leisuredrive pop top, its just fantastic. It has a Zig CP400 Unit which all seems to run off the sole vehicle battery. I have searched the forum & internet & there doesnt seem to be much on this model.

It all seems to work fine but should I try & hook up a Leisure battery, if so how do I do this? Plus how do I change the lighting to run off the leisure battery?

Also, does anyone know if the CP400 charges the vehicle battery when on mains hook up?

Hi Muttley,

I had the same problem, if you can't find a separate leisure battery you probably don't have one, to wire one up to the zigg, take a wire from the positive terminal, and wire it to the "van" switch, then you just earth the negative, now when you switch up to "van" your running on the leisure, when you switch down to "car" your running from the engine bat.
Now you need to install a split charger to charge the leisure battery, I bought one that could also wire the fridge into as well, this way you can take the positive wire from the fridge to the split charger, then take a wire from the split charger to the fridge, and one to the battery (they come with instructions).

I'm no sparky, so more comments on this would be good.

The CP400 unit is only a remote distribution unit designed to be used in conjunction with a Zig PSU like a CF6/CF8/CF9 etc. Used independently all it does is switches between supplies, indicates battery condition (very crudely) and fuses separate circuits like lights and water pump. It does not have a charger and has no mains facility to it.

If you want to charge batteries etc you'll need one of the CF* units

and you'll have some rewiring to do if you fit a leisure battery, however since mains voltages will be involved with the CF unit, get someone who's knowledgeable rather than attempting it yourself.

Incidentally, a campervan doesn't actually need a Zig unit - they were designed for caravans that don't move for weeks at a time. Both batteries will charge as you drive.
